Gaspar de Portolá was a Spanish explorer and governor of Las Californias. He is best known for leading the first European overland expedition to present-day California in 1769. Portolá was born in Os de Balaguer, Catalonia, Spain, in 1716. He joined the Spanish army and served in Italy and North Africa. In 1767, he was appointed governor of Las Californias. Portolá led an expedition to explore and claim Alta California for Spain. The expedition left from San Diego in June 1769 and reached San Francisco Bay in October. Portolá claimed the bay for Spain and established the presidio of San Francisco. He returned to San Diego in January 1770. Portolá served as governor of Las Californias until 1775. He died in Mexico City in 1786.
