Expressive Drawings

This style could be described as “expressive sketch realism”, in which the artist emphasizes emotional depth through rough, organic strokes and a restrained use of color. It has a hand-drawn, unfinished quality that makes the work feel intimate and evocative.

Epictetus (c. 50 AD - c. 135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher. Born a slave in Hierapolis, Phrygia (modern Pamukkale, Turkey), he was educated in Rome as a slave of Epaphroditus, a freedman of Emperor Nero. He was freed from slavery by Nero and became a teacher of philosophy in Rome until 94 AD when the Edict of Domitian forced all philosophers out of Rome. He moved to Nicopolis, Greece, where he taught until his death. He is known for his teachings on the importance of virtue and living in accordance with nature. His most famous work is the Enchiridion, a manual of Stoic philosophy.
