Karl skär i trakt (Karl cuts a strait), says the legend about the founding of Karlskrona in 1680. The strait was cut by the great Swedish king Karl XI, who chose the location for his new naval base due to its strategic position. Karlskrona quickly became one of the most important naval ports in the Baltic Sea, and it played a major role in Sweden's wars against Denmark and Russia. Today, Karlskrona is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its well-preserved naval base is a popular tourist attraction. The city is also home to a number of museums, including the Swedish Naval Museum and the Blekinge Museum.
