Kenema is a city in eastern Sierra Leone, close to the Liberian border and the Western Area Peninsula. The town sits on the River Moa, a tributary of the Sewa River. Kenema is the capital and largest city in Kenema District, and the sixth largest city in Sierra Leone. It has a population of approximately 184,000. Kenema is home to Njala University, Sierra Leone's second university, which has its main campus in the city. The city is also home to a number of other educational institutions, including the Kenema Government Secondary School, the Kenema Seventh-Day Adventist Secondary School, and the Kenema Islamic Secondary School. Kenema's economy is based on mining, agriculture, and tourism. The city is home to a number of mining companies, including the Koidu Holdings diamond mine, Sierra Rutile's bauxite mine, and the African Minerals iron ore mine. Kenema is also a major agricultural center, with the main crops being rice, cassava, cocoa, and coffee. The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Kenema Museum, the Kenema National Park, and the Moa River.
