Porto-Novo is a city on the Gulf of Guinea in Benin. It is the country's administrative capital, although the majority of government functions are carried out in the de facto capital, Cotonou. Porto-Novo remains the official capital in recognition of its historic significance as the capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey. The city is known for its vibrant art scene, with many galleries and studios showcasing local and international artists. Visitors can explore the city's rich history by visiting the Royal Palace, which was built in the 18th century and is now a museum, or by strolling through the historic Adjarra Market. Porto-Novo is also home to several beautiful beaches, where visitors can relax and enjoy the sun and sand.
