Expressive Drawings

This style could be described as “expressive sketch realism”, in which the artist emphasizes emotional depth through rough, organic strokes and a restrained use of color. It has a hand-drawn, unfinished quality that makes the work feel intimate and evocative.

René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, was a French explorer who explored the Mississippi River and claimed the vast territory of Louisiana for France. He was born in Rouen, France in 1643. He joined the Jesuits in 1660, but left the order in 1667 to become a fur trader. In 1673, he traveled to Canada and began exploring the Great Lakes region. In 1682, he traveled down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. He claimed the territory for France and named it Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV. La Salle was killed in 1687 by mutinous members of his own crew.
