Torquato Tasso was an Italian poet and one of the most important figures of the Italian Renaissance. He is best known for his epic poem "Gerusalemme Liberata" ("Jerusalem Delivered"), which tells the story of the First Crusade. Tasso was also a gifted lyric poet, and his sonnets are considered among the finest in Italian literature. He was born in Sorrento, Italy, in 1544, and died in Rome in 1595. Tasso's work is characterized by its elegance, beauty, and passionate intensity. He was a master of the Italian language, and his poetry is still widely read and admired today.
