Villingen-Schwenningen is a city in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. It is the seat of Villingen-Schwenningen District. With a population of 81,750 (in 2019), it is the largest city in the Black Forest and is known for its watch industry. The city was founded in 1972 through a merger of the formerly independent cities of Villingen and Schwenningen. Villingen was first mentioned in 1120 and received town privileges in 1284, while Schwenningen was first mentioned in 1250 and received town privileges in 1323. Both cities grew rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries, largely because of the watch industry. Today, Villingen-Schwenningen is a major center for the production of watches and precision instruments. The city is also home to a university, a museum, and a theater.
