Desamparados lies in the Central Valley of Costa Rica and stands near the capital San José. Once a coffee plantation, the city was officially founded in 1848 and is one of the oldest in the country. The topography of Desamparados is relatively flat, but the Río Tiribí and the Río Damas run through it. To the north are the Montes de Oca, a mountainous area known for its coffee plantations, while the south is dominated by the Cerro de la Carpintera, a volcanic hill with a large cross on top that offers panoramic views of the city. Desamparados is known for its churches, including the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, built in 1862 and featuring a neoclassical facade, and the Iglesia de San Juan de Dios, built in 1927 and featuring a Gothic Revival style. The city is also home to the Museo de Arte Costarricense, which houses a collection of Costa Rican art from the colonial period to the present day.
