Gian Lorenzo Bernini was an Italian sculptor and architect who is considered one of the greatest artists of the Baroque era. Born in Naples in 1598, Bernini displayed an early talent for sculpture and moved to Rome in 1606 to study with his father, Pietro. His early works, such as the "Apollo and Daphne" (1622-1625), showcased his mastery of the Baroque style, characterized by its dramatic gestures, emotional intensity, and elaborate ornamentation. Bernini continued to create masterpieces throughout his career, including the "Ecstasy of St. Teresa" (1647-1652), the "Fountain of the Four Rivers" (1648-1651), and the "Baldacchino" (1624-1633) in St. Peter's Basilica. His work as an architect included designing the famous oval piazza in front of St. Peter's Basilica and the Church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale (1658-1670). Bernini's contributions to Baroque art and architecture left an enduring legacy, influencing generations of artists and shaping the artistic landscape of 17th-century Rome.
